Verbal Reasoning
In the verbal reasoning section, you must be able to use reasoning and language to come to logical conclusions. Your vocabulary is tested in this section, as you will see below in the three types of verbal reasoning questions.
- Analogies– These questions involve finding the relationship between a given pair of words and then applying that relationship to another pair of words. Ex. If A is to B, then C is to D.
- Formal Logic– Using the 2 or 3 given assumptions, you must use logic to gauge whether or not a given conclusion is true. Often, the answer choices are “true,” “false,” or “cannot be determined based on the given information.”
- Antonyms/synonyms– You are given a single word and must find its opposing or similar meaning, depending on the question’s instructions.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
This section is also called an inductive or abstract reasoning test, and you are tested on how well you use images, sets, and figures to find a pattern and apply it to your answers.
There are three types of non-verbal reasoning questions:
- Series Completion– these inductive reasoning questions present you with a series of figures. Your job is to find the relationship between them and solve for the next figure in the series.
- Shape Analogy– In these questions, you will encounter two related images in which you must find the rule that connects them and apply that rule to solve for the next image.
- Finding the Odd One Out– You are presented with a pair of shapes that share a commonality. Your answer choices consist of 4 additional shapes, where you must find the one that is missing that commonality.
How Is the PLI Test Scored?
Your test is scored in a three-step process. First, the total number of correct answers is calculated. Then, your score is scaled to a 100-450 range. Lastly, your score is compared to the population of test takers to create a percentile.
