Synchrony Financial Hiring Process

Synchrony Financial

Synchrony, a leading consumer financial services company in the U.S., hires professionals across technology, customer service, marketing, finance, and risk. Their interview process is structured to identify candidates who align with their values: Caring, Curiosity, Courage, and Confidence.

Recruitment Process

Step 1: Online Application and Resume Screening

The process begins with an online application. Tailor your resume to highlight relevant experience in financial services, customer care, or digital innovation.

Step 2: Online Assessment (for Some Roles)

Depending on the position, you may be asked to complete:

  • Situational Judgment Test (SJT) – Evaluates how you handle workplace challenges and customer interactions.
  • Personality or Work Style Questionnaire – Assesses behavioral traits and alignment with Synchrony’s team culture.
  • Cognitive Ability Test – For analytical or tech roles, this may include logical reasoning, data analysis, and math questions.

Step 3: Phone or Video Interview

A recruiter or HR specialist will conduct an initial screening to discuss:

  • Your background and motivations
  • Interest in Synchrony and the role
  • Salary expectations and availability

Be prepared to explain your passion for innovation and customer-centric thinking.

Step 4: Final Interview Rounds

These may include:

  • Behavioral Interviews – Use the STAR method to answer questions about teamwork, adaptability, leadership, and conflict resolution.
  • Technical Interviews – For roles in IT, data, or risk, expect questions on SQL, Python, system design, or case scenarios.
  • Virtual or Panel Interviews – You may meet with hiring managers or cross-functional leaders.

Employment Assessment Test Practice

The assessment is an online test like job tasks, problem-solving, work history questionnaire, simulation scenarios, and work-style questionnaire.

There are three main tests you are likely to take when applying for any position at Synchrony Financial.

Situational Judgement Test

situational judgement test focuses on your cognitive abilities and the natural behaviors you exhibit under pressure. These tests are usually multiple choice and evaluate you through hypothetical scenarios.

After reading a scenario, you may be asked to indicate how you would react, relate, etc. The scenarios are catered to the banking industry and may revolve around situations like handling banking errors all the way to dealing with screaming customers.

Personality Test

Personality tests are similar to situational judgement tests because they focus on your natural traits and behavioral inclinations. However, a personality test doesn’t look at your traits in regard to high-pressure scenarios.

Instead, these exams look at multiple facets of your personality and put each personality trait into the perspective of how it would affect your job performance in a given field.

For instance, very outgoing individuals thrive in customer service roles but tend to do poorly in solo, non-customer-facing positions.

Numerical Reasoning Exam

Numerical reasoning exams focus on your ability to handle numerical data and process it without error. You don’t need to be an algebraic wiz to master this type of exam, but you do need to be able to handle numbers in a way that is quick, efficient, and accurate.

These tests are often timed and scored compared to other workers in your targeted field.
